A new agreement between CMU and the Joint Forces Staff College is another indication of the university’s ongoing commitment to provide educational services to the military.

Terry Rawls, interim dean for the College of Extended Learning, signed an agreement on behalf of CMU with the commandant of the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va., Feb 10. The agreement will allow the two schools to explore the needs of the JFSC student body and determine which courses CMU might offer at the JFSC site.

JFSC is charged by Congress with teaching leaders of all branches of the military the strategies and skills necessary to coordinate their functions. The college offers a compressed, intensive curriculum to four groups of students each year.

"The most significant aspect of our partnership is to solidify our relationship with this important partner in the military education system, and reach out to their students both as potential CMU students, and perhaps more importantly, as leaders of tomorrow’s potential students," said Rawls. "We plan to take this opportunity to indoctrinate them, so as they go on to command posts they will think of CMU when they think of civilian education."

CMU currently has 23 centers located at military bases throughout the United States.

CEL will not be adding a new center for this program. Classes available for JFSC students will most likely be online and at existing military locations in the East Region. Ann Tolson, CMU’s Richmond (Va.) Center program administrator will be serving the additional student population.

"This is an important link in our overall strategy to deepen our partnership with the military education system," said Rawls. "We have MOUs on more than 23 installations and with a number of schools, including the Command General Staff College, Defense Acquisitions University, and now JFSC. These partnerships are essential as a means of showing our commitment to the military, with which we have a long, proud history."
