Professional Societies

Society of Automotive Engineers (www.sae.org): The SAE is a professional engineering society with nearly 80,000 members worldwide. SAE members represent industry leaders in all areas of land, air and space mobility technology who are working in industry, government and education. The Vehicle Design Program at CMU sponsors an SAE Student Chapter and encourages all design/engineering/manufacturing professionals to support our society.

An important resource and service provided by the SAE: Bookstore 2002 (www.sae.org/bookstore): Features over 600 books, CD-ROM products, professional development tools, membership, and other products and services.

American Society of Body Engineers (www.asbe.com): ASBE is a 55-year-old institution dedicated to the prosperity of the automotive industry. Central Michigan University supports the educational programs, publications and events developed through the ASBE membership and its executive committees. CMU encourages all vehicle designers and engineers to participate in the ASBE Certification Examinations for: entry level designers, intermediate designers and designing engineers.

American Plastics Council: Automotive Learning Center (www.plastics-car.com): Involved in the design, engineering and styling of vehicles, the Automotive Learning Center in Troy, Michigan is intended to help professionals succeed in their jobs. The American Plastics Council represents the plastic design industry whose goal is to help professionals discover how plastic delivers weight savings, design flexibility, durability, parts reduction and superior overall performance.

American Iron and Steel Institute (www.autosteel.org) Auto/Steel Partnership (www.a-sp.org): The Auto/Steel Partnership is a collaboration of the world's leading North American Sheet Steel-producing corporations with DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company and the General Motors Corporation. The leaders of the A/SP recognize the value of combining resources and marked the first large-scale consortium involving automakers and a supplier industry. The object of this partnership is to improve technology, quality and reliability in the manufacture and application of automotive sheet steel.

An important resource and service provided by the A/S Partnership: www.naamsstandards.org. The NAAMS Global Standard Components – Stamping and the NAAMS Global Standard Components – Assembly are produced and maintained in a joint effort by Daimler Chrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation and their suppliers. They describe and define the components that have been adopted as standard by those companies when designing and constructing stamping dies and body assembly tools for sheet steel body components. The effort is conducted under the sponsorship of the Auto/Steel Partnership.
