Chris Moon Goes from Sergeant Major to Civilian with Help from CMU

One of CMU’s greatest supporters at Fort Riley in Kansas is Clistus “Chris” Moon. Chris started his master’s degree program with CMU after retiring from the army as a Sergeant Major. In less than a year and a half – Chris is a very hard worker – he completed his Master of Science in Administration degree with a concentration in Public Administration.

Chris started out looking for an MBA degree but when he read through the curriculum for the MSA from CMU, he felt it was better suited to career plans. “The MSA was a better fit than the MBA,” says Chris. “It just made more sense. The MSA has the right mix of content for anyone in the army or civil service. You learn people skills, administration skills, management skills. You get financial courses, too, but it’s not all about the money. It’s just a great degree for people like me.”

Larry Brockson, CMU program administrator at Fort Riley, says it’s people like Chris that are often drawn to CMU’s MSA program. According to Larry, “Chris Moon was a focused energetic student who realized that after he retired from the army he would need a graduate program that would prepare him to use his training and experience in the civilian sector. He wanted knowledge, not just a piece of paper and he found that in CMU’s MSA program.” The weekend class format offered by CMU was also a big help to Chris whose schedule includes helping out with this three children – Natalie, Sylvia, and Hunter. He took most of his classes at Fort Riley but was able to take three online and one at nearby Fort Leavenworth.

Today Chris is a Staffing Specialist at the Southwest Civilian Personnel Center at Fort Riley. He credits his master’s degree from CMU with helping him secure his new position. “Being in the master’s program at CMU definitely helped,” says Chris. “The Human Resources people here at Fort Riley knew the CMU program and knew people who came out of it received a quality education and could perform to the level they need.”

Chris must have liked the program. His wife is now working on her MSA in Human Resources Administration at CMU.
