MBA Prerequisite Courses

The Online MBA requires completion or demonstration of competency in nine prerequisite courses or their equivalents prior to starting the program.

MBA 503 - Professional Business Communications

Developing professional business communications skills within a team environment. Emphasis on both written and oral communications utilizing current technologies.

  • CMU course: BIS 360
  • Other accredited schools: An English course and a speech course, other types of communication courses.
  • Provide a letter of evidence from a manager or supervisor stating communication skills (writing and public speaking skills), and work experience related to communications.

MBA 504 - Using Financial Accounting Information

Introduces use of financial accounting income statements, balance sheets, and statements of cash flow in managerial planning, control, and evaluation.

  • CMU course: ACC 201 or ACC 203
  • Other accredited schools: Principles of Accounting or Accounting I
  • CLEP Exam (ACC 201): A minimum score of 50 required.
  • Work experience: provide detailed letter of evidence of skills utilized in past and/or current work environments.
  • Online competency assessment test

MBA 505 - The Economic Environment of Business

An overview of the economic forces that affect business. Macroeconomic policies, global economic factors, and microeconomic issues are addressed.

  • CMU course: ECO 201 or ECO 202
  • Other accredited schools: Economics I or Principles of Economics, with macro or micro coverage. We allow engineers to use an Engineering Economics course.
  • CLEP Exam (ECO 201 or 202): A minimum score of 50 required.
  • Work experience: provide detailed letter of evidence of skills utilized in past and/or current work environments.

MBA 506 - The Legal Environment of Business

Basic concepts concerning the interrelationships of business and its external environments. Managerial participation in and response to public policy issues and their resolution.

  • CMU course: BLR 202
  • Other accredited schools: A Business Law course
  • CLEP Exam (BLR 202): A minimum score of 50 required
  • Work experience: provide detailed letter of evidence of skills utilized in past and/or current work environments.

MBA 507 - Introduction to Marketing Management

An introduction to the marketing management process: including the marketing environment, buyer behavior, marketing analysis, segmentation, marketing strategy, the marketing mix and social/ethical issues.

  • CMU course: MKT 300
  • Other accredited schools: An Introduction to Marketing or Principles of Marketing course
  • CLEP Exam (MKT 300): A minimum score of 50 required.
  • One year of work experience in a marketing position.
  • AMA or similar Online marketing course.
  • Work experience: provide detailed letter of evidence of skills utilized in past and/or current work environments.

MBA 508 - Management and Organization

Introduction to the internal structure, processes, and control of organizations.

  • CMU course: MGT 312
  • Other accredited schools: An Introduction to Management or Principles of Management course.
  • CLEP Exam (MGT 312): A minimum score of 50 required.
  • One year of work experience in a managerial position.
  • Work experience: provide detailed letter of evidence of skills utilized in past and/or current work environments.

MBA 509 - Production/Operations Management (now, Supply Chain requirement)

Concepts and applications of production and operations management in business and industry.

  • CMU course: MGT 340
  • Other accredited schools: A Production/Operations Management, Operations Management, Manufacturing Processes course, or Supply Chain Management course.
  • Work experience: provide detailed letter of evidence of skills utilized in past and/or current work environments.

MBA 510 - Financial Management and Analysis

An introduction to basic finance principles and tools including the time value of money, risk and return, capital budgeting and the interpretation of financial statements.

  • CMU course: FIN 332 or FIN 303
  • Other accredited schools: A Business Finance course.
  • FIN 332 Exit Exam (no CLEP Exam available): A minimum score of 70 required.
  • One year of work experience in a finance position.
  • Work experience: provide detailed letter of evidence of skills utilized in past and/or current work environments.
  • Online competency assessment exam

MBA 511 - Statistics for Managerial Decisions

An introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics in a business decision context. Applications of various t-tests, ANOVA, multiple regression, and cross-tabulation are emphasized.

  • CMU course: STA 282
  • Other accredited schools: Any Introduction to Statistics course or any other statistics course.
  • Work experience: provide detailed letter of evidence of skills utilized in past and/or current work environments.
