Lakes, Locks and Legends: The History of the Twin Saults / Program #15190

September 14-18, 2008

The original Ojibwe homeland stretched from the northern Canadian plains to the southeastern shores of the Great Lakes. Today, the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, harbor the history and culture of the Sault Tribe. Explore the heritage of the Twin Saults, as local guides illustrate Ojibwe traditions and perform drum and dance ceremonies. Take to the skies at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, while a boat tour on the St. Mary’s River and visit to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum introduce maritime traditions along Lake Superior. Watch the Soo Locks in action, then sample the Lake Superior Coastal Trail along the eastern Canadian Shield and identify native pictographs in Agawa Bay.
