Syllabus build tool designed for all courses

The syllabus build tool is an innovative tool designed to help you build your syllabus for all CEL courses.* This interactive tool is based on the CEL Course Outline guide/template. This template was designed to standardize the contents, look, and feel of all CEL syllabi. Good syllabus design incorporates many important adult learning principles including communicating clear expectations, providing a standardized structure to help student’s time on task, and establishing you as the expert in content and in the delivery of course content.

The benefits of using this tool include:

  • Access to sample syllabi and your old syllabi for cut and paste operations

  • Automatic filling of standard information such as:

  • Course location and dates

  • Course description

  • Course objectives

  • Evaluation

  • Methodology

  • OCLS information and contact numbers

  • Academic Dishonesty policy

  • ADA policy

  • Instructions and guidelines for what information should be in each section of your syllabus. You will find that these guidelines are based on the eight principles identified for teaching effectiveness in Maximizing Learning

  • Electronic storage and manipulation of all your CEL syllabi

  • Electronic book and equipment ordering

  • In addition, this system allows for the electronic review of your syllabus by mentors, program administrators, and your regional librarian. We expect that this process will provide you with more support in your teaching.

You can expect to use the syllabus build tool starting in Fall 1, 2004. Until then, we will continue to test and improve this tool. You may be contacted to participate in these tests. If you have any questions, please contact your regional associate director.

*Distance Learning instructors are not required to use this tool at this time.
