Document Deliver
Service offers access to books and articles

Editor's note: The following is a reprint of an article which we ran in our February 2002, edition of On Target, and offers an overview for the Off-Campus Library Services document delivery service.

CMU’s Document Delivery office will provide CEL students with books, copies of journal articles and other materials free of charge – students need only pay return shipping charges on books. In fact, students and faculty may request up to 50 items per class per week – 20 per order if ordering by phone.

Please be certain your students know that when making a request they need to include their student number, center where registered, name and complete mailing address, daytime phone number, course currently enrolled in and date after which material is no longer needed. Specific information on how to order items can be found at: http://ocls.cmich.edu/ddorequests.htm.

Items available from the CMU library are generally shipped or downloaded shortly after the request is made, but when an item is not available at the CMU library, Document Delivery personnel search for materials through the Interlibrary Loan program.

If requesting books not owned by the CMU Library, the student will need to ask that the book be obtained from another library through Interlibrary Loan. They will need to supply OCLS staff with a 4 to 6 week "not needed after" date.

Off-Campus Library Services also offers electronic document delivery. This features allows OCLS staff to scan articles and send students to a unique URL that is available for six days or five views. The students are then sent a notification via e-mail that the document is available to view and are given PIN and Web link to a login page. If students experience trouble downloading this material, they can contact OCLS Document Delivery at (800) 274-3838 or oclibsvc@cmich.edu.
