For several years now CEL has been working on
tools that move our operations into the digital age. We are in the
process of rolling out the Syllabus Build Tool, (see article included in
this newsletter) and have several others in various states of
completion. Our intent is to use these tools to build efficiency into
our operations, and an intended side-effect will be that your experience
is a positive one.
At the same time, while we are very proud of
our annual faculty development workshops we must admit to some
frustration in that effort. We generally see about one-third of our
faculty at those meetings, and while most universities drool at the
prospect of getting one-third of their faculty together at one time, the
simple truth is that the two-thirds who are not there are a concern. We
are putting too many eggs in one basket, so to speak, and need to
broaden our faculty development efforts to reach out throughout the year
with opportunities, information, and collaborations.
The obvious solution is to expand our faculty
development activities into a variety of modes. Thus, we have decided to
cancel the annual faculty development workshops next fall and instead
re-direct the resources into broadening our faculty development
activities. We are pleased beyond words at our partnership with the
Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching, an all-CMU effort aimed at
improving teaching throughout the university. CEL staff will be working
hard with FaCIT to develop new orientation tools, expand the Faculty
Resource Center at
http://www.cel.cmich.edu/faculty,
and develop new materials and opportunities for professional development
for you and your colleagues.
For those of you who loved the camaraderie of
the workshops as much as I, do not despair. We do anticipate returning
to face-to-face meetings in the fall of 2005.
