Creating Your Course

Syllabus Build Tool

As a CMU ProfEd instructor, you are required to use CMU’s Syllabus Build Tool (SBT) to create your course syllabus. The Syllabus Build Tool provides an electronic template that automatically fills in:

As you go through the Syllabus Build Tool template, you should pay attention to the prompts which accompany each section. These will assist you in creating a clear, easy to reference document that will enhance students’ understanding of what to expect in your course.

When you submit your syllabus, it will go to the appropriate Program Administrator for review and approval. The Program Administrator will check for any general errors (e.g., course dates) and whether all sections have been completed. If they have any questions regarding your syllabus, you will receive a “not approved” message through the Syllabus Build Tool system. You can then amend any necessary sections and resubmit. Your syllabus will also be reviewed by ProfEd Academic Programs staff and Program Directors during End of Course survey reviews and 3-year approval reviews.

Once your syllabus is approved, it will be posted online for student access. You will also be able to import and update this version through SBT for your future teaching assignments.

Through the Syllabus Build Tool system, you will also submit your textbook(s), other course materials (e.g., course reserves or case studies), and equipment requests. These are explained in more detail on the next page.

Master Course Syllabus

Each course has a master syllabus approved through the university curricular process. The master syllabus follows a standard format that gives the description of the course and any prerequisites that appear in the Bulletin, the rationale for the course level, the materials and other requirements for students, the typical instructional formats, suggested or required textbooks, the course objectives, an outline of topics, typical methods for student evaluation, and a bibliography. The master syllabus, as approved through the curricular process, is filed in the Academic Senate Office.

You will receive a copy of the Master Course Syllabus with each course contract. If you have any questions regarding the Master Course Syllabus, please contact your Program Director.
