Teaching Online Workshop
New Online instructors are required to take CMU’s “Teaching Online” workshop. This four-module workshop offers faculty the opportunity to gain pedagogical understanding of online teaching and practical experience in online learning. The workshop covers creating an online syllabus, preparing and presenting online content, communication strategies, assessment methods, and other issues that are crucial for effective online teaching. Participation will be asynchronous and synchronous. In each module, participants are expected to read posted notes, submit a required written assignment, respond to questions in Discussion Board, take an online quiz and participate in live chat.
CMU Online Staff
CMU Online Staff are the program administrators for all undergraduate and graduate online courses. They are the primary contacts for all online students and are also here to assist you throughout your course. The first time you teach a specific online course, CMU Online staff will request that the master course shell be copied into your Blackboard course section. Subsequent course copies will be your responsibility.
You should contact your respective CMU Online staff member when:
- You need assistance in locating the appropriate contact for Syllabus Build Tool, textbook questions, or any CMU policy/procedure.
- You expect any delay in your communication with students, particularly if it deviates from the standard response time you indicated on your syllabus.
- You experience an extenuating circumstance that could affect your ability to continue in the course.
- You have questions regarding student issues that arise in class.
You should direct students to the CMU Online staff when:
- They are expressing interest in dropping/adding/withdrawing from your course. CMU has specific policies regarding drops, adds and withdrawals, and students must follow the appropriate procedures to ensure correct processing.
- They are having trouble ordering your required textbook(s).
- They have questions regarding any issue outside of your course (ex., other course offerings, graduation requirements, paying tuition, etc.).
Center for Instructional Design (CID)
CMU’s Center for Instructional Design (CID) can assist you with online course supplements or enhancements.
CID’s mission is to provide faculty with the highest level of instructional design and instructional technology development. CID staff are committed to assisting faculty in the design and development of instructional material for online and hybrid courses, including best practices and multimedia projects. To this end they provide individual consultations, small group workshops, and online training.
CID takes great pride in advocating online teaching and learning to the campus community. They provide on- and off-campus faculty with instructional design, technical support, and multimedia production services.
