Hello. Faculty News and Notes is a
monthly electronic publication distributed to all instructors in
our faculty pool who have taught off-campus in the last two
years. This publication was created to help you feel more
connected to CMU and to provide you with news and updates to our
off-campus policies and procedures. If you have any
questions or comments, please contact us at

Announcing CMU Online
Central Michigan University's
Off-Campus Programs office of Distance/Distributed Learning has
changed its name to CMU Online. This change has been implemented
to better reflect the identity of students and professors
engaging with courses in an online format or through distributed
learning packages.
CMU will continue to provide
excellent customer service and the same great courses. So when
looking for information previously found through DDL, look for
us now at CMU Online!
2007 Michigan Blackboard Users Group Conference
On Friday, October
19th, Central Michigan University will host the 2007
miBUG conference on the University’s main campus in
Mount Pleasant, Michigan. CMU faculty, both on and off
campus, are invited to attend this one-day event. A
diverse collection of sessions is planned, covering
topics including podcasting, pedagogical issues, hybrid
instruction, technological concerns, product
demonstrations and many others. View the
preliminary list of topics. For more information
or to register visit the
miBug
Web site. A complete conference schedule should be
available at the end of September. Please note: The
conference fee and any related expenses will NOT be
reimbursable.
Greetings!
My name is Tim Peters and
I am the new Director of CMU’s Off-Campus Library Services
department. OCLS has a long tradition of providing
top-quality library services to off-campus students and
faculty and I am excited to be responsible for continuing
and building upon this history.
Like all of you, the focus
of the OCLS staff is helping students meet their educational
and professional goals. In a more specific sense, our
purpose is to assist students in finding the information and
providing the services they need to successfully complete
their course work. OCLS offers reference and research
assistance via telephone, e-mail, and instant messaging and
provides timely delivery of requested articles and books.
Any time a student needs help finding or obtaining
information, OCLS is happy to help. Our goal is to replicate
the library service the on-campus student receives for every
one of our off-campus learners.
Each of you is a vital part of us
realizing that goal. With so many of our students being
pulled in various directions by school, work, and family
responsibilities, and many having returned to college after
having been away for an extended time, we cannot assume that
they are familiar with today’s library or fluent in its
usage. They may not even realize that OCLS is their
connection to the resources of the CMU Library and the
academic world beyond, but a word from their instructor can
steer them to the resources and services that will help them
complete their assignments, realize their educational goals,
and become successful lifelong learners. It has been my
experience that faculty who use libraries themselves and
promote libraries to their students have students who are
more information literate and who are better able to
understand and successfully complete their course work.
Please help your students
get the most out of their time with us by alerting them to
the fact that Off-Campus Library Services is here for them
at
http://ocls.cmich.edu and that we are more than
happy to assist them in any way possible. And if you, as a
faculty member, need assistance of any kind please don’t
hesitate to contact me at either (989) 774-3720 or
peter1t@cmich.edu.
Have a great semester.
