Important Reminders for Faculty Contracts and Pay
-
Along with other
paperwork, new faculty must submit a Form W-4
(Employee's Withholding) and Form I-9
(Employment Eligibility Verification) that is either
completed in the presence of a CMU representative or
notarized. Send these forms by mail to Kay Fox in CMU's
Off-Campus Programs Financial Operations group.
-
New faculty who
previously taught on campus must submit a NEW
Form W-4 and a Form I-9 that
is completed in the presence of a CMU representative or
notarized. These documents are not automatically
transferred to Off-Campus payroll.
-
You MUST
use your CMU e-mail account. We send all correspondence
to this account. If you prefer to use a different e-mail
account, you can set up your CMU account to forward
e-mails to another account.
-
Your
electronically signed course contracts must be
returned from your CMU e-mail.

Annual University
Campaign
Off-Campus Programs faculty are invited to join the
leadership and staff in participating in the 2009 Annual
University Campaign, October 12th to December 4th, 2009.
100% of your gift will go to the scholarship or award you
designate, and greatly assist your students. Over the past
two years, nearly $44,000 in scholarships and awards have
been earned by off-campus students. Some of these students
may not have been able to remain enrolled had they not
earned an award. Your gift matters! Please go online to
www.cmich.edu and click on Annual
University Campaign. Be sure to designate your gift to one
or more of the Off-Campus Program Scholarships/Awards
identified in the drop-down box. Any questions please
contact Dave Nicholson, Manager, Alumni Relations at
nicho2dl@cmich.edu or (248) 526-2630.
CMU Debuts New
Copyright Site
The CMU Copyright Committee recently
redesigned and improved the university's copyright site. The
new site includes more information helpful to the faculty
who use copyrighted materials in the face-to-face and online
classrooms and can be found at
http://copyright.cmich.edu.
The new site includes a link entitled
Course Reserves/Permissions. This is the link that
off-campus faculty should use when requesting that items be
placed on electronic reserve for a class. The link on the
Off-Campus Library Services Web site once called
Coursepack Support has been renamed and redirected to
this new suite of pages. All online requests for electronic
reserves will be handled through this new interface. If you
wish to submit your request via e-mail, you can send it to
coursereserves@cmich.edu. If you wish to speak
to someone about electronic reserves, you can call (989)
774-3825.
Excellence through
Inclusion
Next month CMU will host a special event
focused on engaging faculty in discussions of multicultural
teaching and learning (see announcement in Workshops and
Training below). For our instructors unable to travel to
Mount Pleasant, we wanted to highlight a couple of valuable
resources available online:
-
The Faculty
Center for Innovative Teaching (FaCIT) has numerous
resources available for our off-campus faculty
population. Visit their
Diversity and Inclusion resources
for access to a variety of studies focused on this vital
topic.
-
The
Diversity Resources Project is a
World Wide Web site developed by librarians at the
Central Michigan University Libraries to support and
enhance research and teaching related to multicultural
and diversity-related issues and topics. The site
contains information on library collections and
services, as well as links to outside resources that
contain information relevant to multicultural and
diversity-related issues.
Alumni Guest
Speakers
Occasionally an Off-Campus Programs graduate offers to
speak to a class of current students regarding their career
field. If you are interested in hosting one of our alums as
part of a learning module, please e-mail Dave Nicholson,
Manager, Alumni Relations for Off-Campus Programs at
nicho2dl@cmich.edu to discuss your interest.
CONDOR
Without a doubt, the faculty at Central Michigan
University have proven themselves to be a highly creative
and innovative group. To boost their recognition, the
Central Michigan University Online
Digital Object Repository
was created, more commonly known as CONDOR. The repository
collects the academic and scholarly products of the
University in a single, searchable and easily accessible
location. CONDOR is fully indexed by Google and other search
engines.
Complete contributor guidelines are available at
http://condor.cmich.edu/cdm4/condor_faq.php,
however the most important criteria for acceptance are: The work
must be produced or sponsored by CMU faculty (on or off-campus),
staff, students, or academic departments; it must be
educational, artistic, or research-oriented and it must be a
completed version, ready for distribution. Examples of works
include: articles, preprints, working papers, technical reports,
conference papers, Web-based exhibits/presentations, books,
theses and dissertations, data sets, visualizations,
simulations, and other models, multimedia, learning objects,
PowerPoint presentations and posters.
All faculty are encouraged to participate in the building of
this valuable resource to raise the profile of CMU as a teaching
and research institution. For more information, refer to the FAQ
link shown earlier or the CONDOR home at
http://condor.cmich.edu.
H1N1 Flu Recommended
Precautions
Given the anticipated spread of the H1N1
influenza virus, CMU's Core Crisis Group is working closely
with University Health Services and the Central Michigan
District Health Department. We are following the guidelines
provided by our local health department and the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
As you may know, the flu can be spread
easily from person to person. It is important to
re-emphasize the precautions you should take to reduce the
chances of becoming ill. Symptoms of H1N1 influenza include
a fever of 100 degrees or more, cough, sore throat, runny or
stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue,
diarrhea and vomiting.
In an effort to reduce transmission and
illness severity we suggest the following recommended
precautions:
The following are steps you can take
to reduce the spread of the flu:
-
Practice good hand hygiene
by washing your hands often with soap and water,
especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based
hand cleaners are also effective.
-
Sanitize equipment. The
flu virus is readily spread through office equipment,
exercise equipment, doorknobs and any object handled by
the public.
-
Cover your mouth and nose with a
tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't
have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or
shoulder
– not into your hands. Avoid
touching your eyes, nose or mouth to reduce the spread
of germs.
-
Stay home if you are sick
for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever
or signs of a fever (have chills, feel very warm, have a
flushed appearance, or are sweating). This should be
determined without the use of fever-reducing
medications, containing ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Isolate yourself as much as possible to reduce exposure
to other individuals.
-
Talk to your health care
provider to find out if you should be
vaccinated for seasonal flu and/or the H1N1 flu.
Seasonal flu vaccine is currently available through
University Health Services. The availability of the H1N1
flu vaccine for CMU faculty, students and employees is
not known at this time, but University Health Services
will release information once details are available.
For the most
up-to-date information on flu, visit
http://flu.gov
or call 1-800-CDC-INFO.
If you have any
questions concerning the H1N1 Flu please contact Carmen
Ceja-Blohm at
cejab1c@cmich.edu.

Workshops and Training Opportunities
CMU is excited to host
the CRLT Players Theatre Program from the University of
Michigan for a special event on Friday, November 20 from
8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Bovee University Center on
CMU's main campus. If you live near the Mount Pleasant
area, we encourage you to consider attending:
USING THEATRE TO ENHANCE TEACHING AND LEARNING AND
IMPROVE INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE
The CRLT Players Theatre Program
from the University of Michigan develops and performs
sketches that engage faculty and graduate students in
discussions of multicultural teaching and learning and
institutional climate. Sketches are based on research
concerning the experiences of under-represented students
and faculty, such as women faculty and students in
science and engineering, students of color, and students
with disabilities.
This is a free program for CMU faculty.
