Off-Campus Faculty and
CONDOR
Last year, Central Michigan University created
CONDOR, an online institutional repository, as a way to collect
the academic and scholarly products of the University in a
single, searchable, and easily accessible location. Off-campus
faculty are invited to deposit scholarly items they have
created, including learning objects, PowerPoint presentations,
and research articles, into CONDOR as a way to expose their
accomplishments to others (CONDOR is indexed by Google and other
search engines) and to raise the profile of Central Michigan
University as a teaching and research institution. The
University is encouraging all faculty to participate in the
building of this valuable resource. For more information about
CONDOR go to
http://repository.cmich.edu/cdm4/condor_faq.php.
Library Adds Five New
Streaming Videos
Five new streaming videos have been added to the
CMU Libraries' collection. They are Killing creativity: are
schools or parents to blame:; Battle of the brains
[multiple intelligences]; Integrating ESL students into
the classroom; Global resources: management and
competition; and Women owned businesses. These videos
are entirely accessible and viewable online.
If you have any questions about using these
videos in your classroom, please contact an OCLS librarian using
our online reference form, (https://ocls.cmich.edu/forms/reference/referenceform.htm).
Math Tutoring Available for
Off-Campus Students
The CMU Mathematics Assistance Center (MAC) now
offers math and statistical assistance services to off-campus
students. The MAC tutors will answer questions and provide
guidance on assignments related to mathematics, statistics, and
data analysis. For more information on how this new service can
be utilized by your students go to
www.cst.cmich.edu/units/mth/mthcenter/offcampus.html.
Blackboard Listserv and
Redesigned Login Page
One of the many challenges of utilizing a Course
Management System, such as Blackboard, is in communicating
upgrades, outages and other system-related information in a
timely and readily-accessible manner. To better inform faculty
and increase the available methods of communicating
Blackboard-related information, the BBFACULT e-mail listserv has
been created. Beginning with Fall 2008, any instructor or
teaching assistant associated with a Blackboard course site
which is set to "available" will be automatically subscribed to
the BBFACULT listerv. Each semester the list of subscribers will
be re-built to include only those instructors who are
using Blackboard in the current term. Notices will continue to
be sent through the CMUToday list and also posted to the
Blackboard system status pages, but the new listserv provides an
additional avenue of communication with faculty.
Blackboard users will also note the newly
re-designed login page at
http://blackboard.cmich.edu. The page employs the
current university design template and provides links to our
collection of Faculty and Student tutorials, along with
system status information, known issue announcements and
other Blackboard-related resources. The page places all
Blackboard related resources together into one convenient
location.
Annual University
Campaign
All faculty members are encouraged to
participate in this year's University Campaign. For every dollar
you give, the University will match it at the rate of 50%. Some
have asked, "Why should members of the Off-Campus Programs
faculty participate?" The answer is: by directing your
contributions to a student scholarship, you can help ensure future students are financially able to enroll in your
classes. In many cases, our off-campus scholarships make the
difference for students and then lead to
life changing experiences.
100% of your donation to the 2008-09 Annual
University Campaign can go directly to funding a scholarship you
designate. While Off-Campus Programs has several scholarships in
place, our faculty members are encouraged to designate to the
Bernard Landuyt Scholarship, in honor of a long time
off-campus instructor.
For online giving, please use
www.giving.cmich.edu/campaign.
If you need assistance or have questions, please
contact Dave Nicholson, Manager of Alumni Relations for
Off-Campus Programs at (248) 526-2630, or e-mail him at
