Celebrating Your Success
Rick Sites (PSC 522, HSC 571) and his son Brian
Sites recently issued the 4th edition of their Ohio Hospital Law
Handbook, a compendium of select Ohio statutes and regulations
used by Ohio hospital attorneys and managers. In addition to
Rick's faculty involvement with CMU, Brian is a 2005 CMU MSA
graduate who went on to graduate from Florida State University
Law School, pass the Florida state bar exam, and has been
clerking for Justices on the Florida Supreme Court (currently
Justice Perry). Information about their handbook is posted at
www.ohanet.org/legal/default.htm.

stories to share, please e-mail Sarah Young at

What To Do if
Approached by a Student with Disabilities
As an instructor, you are the CMU representative most
likely to have contact with students who have disclosed or
undisclosed disabilities. The University relies on you to be
sensitive to those who indicate they have special needs as
defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In
some cases these students will have already identified their
need for accommodation to the Disability Support Services (DSS)
Liaison, and reasonable accommodations may have already been
approved. In other cases the student may request that you
make some accommodation. Should you receive such a request,
you should inquire if they have provided documentation to
the DSS Liaison. If no formal request for accommodations has
been submitted, please direct them to the DSS Liaison or DSS
Coordinator at 1-800-950-1144, ex. 3264 or to our Web site:
www.cel.cmich.edu/ada. The DSS office is responsible
for the coordination of services for students with
disabilities. Reasonable accommodations cannot be granted
retroactively, thus students are responsible for contacting
the DSS office at least four weeks prior to the beginning of
classes. Late requests for accommodations may result in
delays, substitutions or denial of accommodations. For
additional guidance, you can access the faculty brochure at
the following link,
www.cel.cmich.edu/ada/2009-Faculty-Brochure.pdf.

Please make a note of the following closures
and deadlines pertaining to the Grading Portal:
-
The Web
Grading Portal will be unavailable for the submission of
grades starting Friday, May 22nd, 2009 until
approximately noon on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 due to
system upgrades.
-
The Web
Grading Portal will close for the Spring 2009 semester

Daily Snapshot
Schedule from SAP to Blackboard
On Monday, May 18th, the current daily update of course,
enrollment and instructor assignment data from SAP to
Blackboard (snapshot), will be run on a four-times a day
basis. The new snapshot schedule will be:
8 p.m.
– full day snapshot (courses, enrollments, instructors)
2 a.m.
– partial (student enrollments)
8 a.m.
– partial (student enrollments)
2 p.m.
– partial (student enrollments)
The need for up-to-date enrollment information is
especially critical at the start of a new term when students
most commonly add and drop classes. With the benefit of
multiple snapshots, students no longer will need to wait an
entire day before getting access to their course(s) in
Blackboard, which will in turn allow them to "catch up" with
the rest of the class as quickly as possible. The new
snapshot schedule will not impact overall system performance
and should be a seamless process for Blackboard end users.
H1N1 Flu Recommended
Precautions
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) the
H1N1 virus (swine flu) has been confirmed in 43 states
as of May 8, 2009. ProfEd has program centers located in
13 of these identified states potentially impacting
faculty, staff and students. In an effort to reduce
transmission and illness severity we suggest the
following recommended precautions:
-
Cover nose and mouth with tissue when you cough
or sneeze
-
Throw tissue in trash after use
-
Wash hands often with soap and water
(especially after you cough or sneeze)
-
Avoid close contact with sick people
-
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
(germs spread this way)
-
If you get influenza-like illness symptoms, stay
home from work or school except to seek medical care
and limit contact with others to keep from infecting
them
If you have any questions concerning the H1N1 Flu
please contact Carmen Ceja-Blohm at
cejab1c@cmich.edu.
