New Coordinator for Learning
Management System (LMS) Support
We are very pleased to announce that Tyler
Morkin joined ProfEd's Office of Technology effective Monday,
March 16th in the position of Coordinator, Learning
Management System (LMS) Support. Tyler joins the current LMS
team of Jeremy Bond (Administrator) and Sue Parker (Assistant
Administrator) in providing Blackboard support to CMU's faculty
and students.
Tyler is originally from Crystal Falls, in
Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He is currently pursuing a
bachelor's degree at CMU and was previously employed with
the CMU Information Technology Helpdesk. At the Helpdesk,
Tyler gained extensive experience with Blackboard, Wimba and
other related technologies. Tyler's knowledge and customer
service skills will allow him to provide valuable assistance
to CMU's Blackboard user community right out of the gate.
For faculty who may be unfamiliar with ProfEd's LMS group, in addition to the scheduled support and
training they provide to online faculty and students, the
group also provides 2nd level Blackboard support
to the IT Helpdesk. Tickets relating to issues which cannot
be resolved by the Helpdesk or those that require additional
research are escalated on to the LMS group for resolution.
Please take a moment to welcome Tyler to the
LMS group. He can be reached via e-mail at
morki1tj@cmich.edu
or by phone at extension 7512.
Celebrating Your Success
CMU is proud of its full-time and part-time
faculty – yet so infrequently do we take the time to
acknowledge the wonderful things you are doing both in and
out of your courses. In our Faculty News and Notes
distribution and the Faculty Resource Center Web page (www.cel.cmich.edu/faculty),
we would like to highlight some of these activities. Please
e-mail Stephanie Bechtel with accomplishments you'd like to
share – best practices in your courses, recent publications,
relevant grant awards, etc.
These accomplishments will be posted on our FRC
Web page, and every month we'll select one or two to share
through this e-mail publication. In addition, we can help you
identify other avenues for sharing your successes, such as
CONDOR, CMU's online institutional repository (http://condor.cmich.edu/cdm4/condor_faq.php?).
Please direct any questions to Stephanie Bechtel
at

Textbook Support for
Off-Campus Programs Military Students
The Scholarship Committee of Off-Campus
Programs is pleased to announce the creation of a new award.
The U.S. Armed Forces Textbook Award will provide financial
assistance to active duty personnel and/or members of their
immediate family. Eligibility is limited to all enlisted
personnel, E-1 through E-9, and commissioned officers in pay
grades O-1 through O-3 and their immediate family members
enrolled in Off-Campus Programs. Eligible students may apply
for up to $250 per term for the purchase of textbooks, with
a lifetime maximum of $500 per family. We anticipate
accepting initial applications for Spring II Term, 2010.
While the alumni campaign to raise funds for
this award will roll out in the coming weeks, we are pleased
to report as of the publication date of this issue of
Faculty News and Notes, twelve ProfEd alumni, faculty
members and staff have volunteered to become Lead Donors,
pledging a total of $7,000 toward the award. You are invited
to join these twelve generous folks as a Lead Donor. If you
are interested, please contact Dave Nicholson at
nicho2dl@cmich.edu.
The campaign will run from March, 2009 to June 30, 2010.
Coding Reviewer Pay by
Event Package Number
Starting immediately we need to code all
capstone reviewer pay by Event Package Number (EPN). Please
include the EPN on any request
for reviewer pay. Linda Bechtel and Karen Mordica will be
sending these requests back if they do not contain the EPN.
OCLS Increases Research
Lab Offerings
Beginning in 2006, Off-Campus Library
Services (OCLS) began offering librarian-led research labs
at the Metro Atlanta center. In 2007, OCLS began offering
similar labs at our Troy and DeKalb centers, and in 2008 the
service was expanded to the Southfield and Auburn Hills
centers as well, thereby affording students even greater
opportunity for intensive research consultation. And on
March 26, 2009, OCLS will offer its first-ever research lab
at the Saginaw center.
Typically held on an evening from 5-8 p.m.
(although there have been some Saturday labs), these labs offer
students an opportunity to meet face-to-face with an OCLS
librarian in order to have questions answered and to receive
instruction on using the library's resources and services. These
labs are well-attended and are appreciated by students at the
centers. It's a valuable opportunity for off-campus students to
have intensive and specific individual research questions
answered immediately by a librarian. For a complete listing of
research labs go to
http://ocls.cmich.edu/researchlabs.html.
Online Courses Payment
Notice – Effective Spring II
Online classes will be paid over the
duration of the scheduled course dates, with a final
adjusted payment based on the final class list. You must
assign the final grades via our online grading system
located at
https://portal.cmich.edu/ess/cm_redirect.asp?VarID=9
to receive your final payment.
Expense Reporting Reminder
All faculty that have contracts requiring travel
need to follow the below guideline for submitting expenses for
payment. Expense reports should be submitted, with appropriate
documentation, within 30 days of the course end date and no
later than 60 days.
