ProfEd Faculty News & Notes - March, 2008

News...

Hello. Faculty News and Notes is a monthly electronic publication distributed to all instructors in our faculty pool who have taught off-campus in the last two years. This publication was created to help you feel more connected to CMU and to provide you with news and updates to our off-campus policies and procedures. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at frc@cmich.edu.

Blackboard - it's not just for online courses

A Blackboard course Web site is automatically created for every course offered by CMU, whether that course takes place in Mount Pleasant, Michigan; Atlanta, Georgia; Online; or in Minot AFB, North Dakota. Instructors need not take any special action to make sure the course sites are created. If a course is scheduled in SAP, a site is created in Blackboard. Once a signed contract is returned, the course is associated with an instructor in SAP, which in turn updates Blackboard, adding the course to an instructor's list. Face to face courses can benefit from the use of Blackboard as a place to load documents, conduct assessment and provide students with feedback. Visit www.cmich.edu/blackboard/home.asp and click "Faculty Tutorials" to get started.

University Annual Campaign

Dr. Hancock and Dave Nicholson are very pleased to share the outcome of the University Annual Campaign and to tell the staff and faculty some great news. Results from the Annual University Campaign for ProfEd show an increase of donors, from 31 in 2006 to 49 for 2007. Along with this increased participation is an increase of 42% in dollars pledged, for a total of $12,871. As the amount received will be matched by the University, ProfEd will have an additional $19,306 available for scholarships and grants for the 2008-09 school year. Thanks to all who gave so generously to the 2007 Annual University Campaign!

The second item of great news is we recently received three new scholarships. In some cases it will be a few years before these endowments grow sufficient interest to permit awarding we, none-the-less, are very grateful to the donors for designating ProfEd in their endowments.

The Joyce and Gary DeWitt $100,000 Endowed Scholarship

Students enrolled in Off-Campus Programs offered in the greater Grand Rapids area will be eligible for the scholarship. Other criteria include: a GPA of at least 3.0, be enrolled in a minimum of two courses during the year and demonstrate financial need.

The Morris Family $25,000 Endowed Scholarship

Michael and Laurie Morris of Sterling Heights, Michigan are parents of two CMU graduates. Daughter Jamie has an undergraduate degree in Public Relations, as well as an MSA degree from CMU's Off-Campus Programs. Son Scott has a BS in Business Administration degree, and Mike has earned two degrees through CMU's Off-Campus Programs.

The family decided to rotate this scholarship between ProfEd, CBA and CCFA on an annual basis. This means our students may apply for The Morris Family Scholarship every third year. Criteria for this award include: a minimum of 3.2 GPA, demonstration of financial need is not necessary and upon graduation recipients are encouraged to support the University by becoming a Gold Member of the Alumni Association.

The Kenneth and Jane Rogers $100,000 Endowed Scholarship

Kenneth and Jane Rogers of Clarkson, Michigan created this endowment for the purpose of helping single parents of S.E. Michigan. Ken has a degree through CMU's Off-Campus Programs and witnessed the sacrifices other students had to make in order to maintain their family and complete their college work. He is also a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in Public Administration and a former commencement speaker.

Look for an announcement soon regarding a corporate scholarship designed to help our military and their immediate family members enrolled in CMU's Off-Campus Programs.

Please submit your grades online through your CMU Portal Page. For specific directions, please see the help menu items located on your CMU Portal Page (https://portal.cmich.edu/default.aspx) or see the "How to Submit Your Grades Online" procedure on the Faculty Resource Center. To ensure success.

  1. Please access your CMU Portal Page on the last day of your course to make sure that your class list is available under the link called "Web Grades". If your class list is not available, please let Linda Kolhoff know asap, so that we can fix this problem before your grades are due.

  2. Your grades are due two weeks after the last day of your course. You have two weeks from the end of your course to submit your grades online. We will be tracking your submission.

  3. The online grading system does not affect our payroll system. If you do not get paid, please contact Karen Mordica.

  4. The Incomplete/Deferred Grade Form is not a true online form. You may complete it online, but you will need to print it off to sign it and mail it in to Linda Kolhoff at 802 Industrial Drive, Mount Pleasant, MI 48858.
