Blackboard - it's not just for online courses

A Blackboard course Web site is automatically created for every course offered by CMU, whether that course takes place in Mount Pleasant, Michigan; Atlanta, Georgia; Online; or in Minot AFB, North Dakota. Instructors need not take any special action to make sure the course sites are created. If a course is scheduled in SAP, a site is created in Blackboard. Once a signed contract is returned, the course is associated with an instructor in SAP, which in turn updates Blackboard, adding the course to an instructor's list. Face to face courses can benefit from the use of Blackboard as a place to load documents, conduct assessment and provide students with feedback. Visit www.cmich.edu/blackboard/home.asp and click "Faculty Tutorials" to get started.

OCLS Moving into Online Instruction

The Off-Campus Library Services (OCLS) department has begun using Wimba to deliver library instruction sessions to online classes. Since the students do not meet in a single physical location, the traditional model of a librarian providing a face-to-face orientation won't work. Thanks to Wimba, faculty and students in the online environment have direct access to an OCLS librarian and the knowledge of library resources and services that this person brings.

According to librarian Jennifer Rundels, the online orientation sessions given this Spring have been very successful. "The faculty and student response has been very positive. Wimba not only encourages interaction but it allows us to reach students anywhere in the world. My recent sessions have been attended by students as far away as Korea, Afghanistan, and the United Kingdom."

The OCLS librarians are excited about this new teaching opportunity and look forward to reaching even more online learners in the future. If you have questions about our sessions or would like to schedule one for your own class, contact Jennifer at runde1jj@cmich.edu.
