ProfEd Faculty News & Notes - April 2007

News...

Hello. Faculty News and Notes is a monthly electronic publication distributed to all instructors in our faculty pool who have taught off-campus in the last two years. This publication was created to help you feel more connected to CMU and to provide you with news and updates to our off-campus policies and procedures. If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at frc@cmich.edu.

Lilly North Conference on College and University Teaching Reimbursement Guidelines

Planning for the Lilly North Conference has begun. We will cover the cost of registration for any off-campus instructor who has a presentation or poster accepted for this conference. If you have any questions, please contact Alicia Haley.

Maximizing Learning and Maximize Your Learning

Spring is a good time to review! Please take some time and read the eight principles of teaching effectiveness as well as the student document, Maximize Your Learning. Many faculty use Maximize Your Learning on the first day of class to talk to students about their responsibility to learning, and all faculty are evaluated on the 8 principles of teaching effectiveness.

Textbook Review Copies

Contact publishers directly to ask for review copies of textbooks. The Off-Campus Library Services Web site’s Faculty Support page links to several resources to help you find publisher contact information. The Faculty Center Network from MBS, for example, lets you search for textbooks and request review copies. Please make sure that you know the ISBN number to the student’s copy to enter in the Syllabus Build Tool.

Upcoming Online Workshops

The Center for Instructional Design will be hosting two new online workshops. The Blackboard Task Workshop consists of twelve tasks to familiarize you with the features and functions of Blackboard. Teaching Online, offers faculty the opportunity to gain pedagogical understanding of online teaching and practical experience in online learning. If you have any questions on the online workshops, please contact Mingsheng Dai.

Citation Linker

CMU Libraries are offering another way to find full-text articles and check the availability of specific articles. The Citation Linker can help you easily find out if a journal is available electronically or if a particular article is online. This is another feature of the Find It! system integrated into CMU research databases and replaces the A-Z eJournal list.

Technology Update...

Instant Messaging (IM)

Instant Messaging (IM) is quickly becoming the most popular means of communicating online.  Recently, Horizon Wimba's IM solution, "Pronto," was installed on CMU's Blackboard system. This easy-to-use tool provides an opportunity for you to use IM to communicate with your students and/or groups of your students. Pronto allows interaction outside of Blackboard, with features including text and voice tools, one-to-one and group IM sessions, message logging, custom and Blackboard-integrated contact lists and an easy to use interface. Pronto is optional, therefore, instructors and students must opt-in to benefit from Pronto by creating an account and downloading the software. To get started, click the "Connections" link in your Blackboard course shell and look for "Pronto." See the Faculty Resource Center for more information about ProntoIf you have any questions or need assistance with the installation and/or use of Pronto, please contact Jeremy Bond or Sue Parker.
