Master of Arts degree in Reading and Literacy K-12
The Department of Teacher Education and Professional Development offers the
Master of Arts degree in Reading and Literacy K-12 to prepare teachers as
reading specialists. This program is based on the teacher education standards of
the International Reading Association (IRA), National Council of Teachers of
English (NCTE), National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education
(NCATE), and the Michigan State Board of Education for the Reading Specialist
(BR) Endorsement. A major focus of the program is organization and
implementation of school literacy programs as well as diagnosis and treatment of
difficulties in literacy. Classroom practice, current issues, and focused
research in literacy are stressed. Students will also develop technological and
viewing skills and will infuse literacy across the curriculum.
The major objectives of the program will enable students to:
- Organize and implement school literacy programs
- Diagnose and treat difficulties in literacy
- Implement appropriate reading and writing instruction
- Develop interdisciplinary and integrated units involving literacy
- Conduct research about current issues of literacy 6.Develop
technological skills related to literacy programs
