Course Description

Discovering the Science of Alcohol (DSA) is an interactive, discovery-based alcohol education and abuse prevention program for secondary science classes. Developed under a contract with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in collaboration with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), DSA combines the most recent scientific understandings of the biochemistry, genetics, pathology and neurology of alcohol use with sound pedagogy. This unique course, designed for science and health teachers, will combine online instruction with experiences in implementation and evaluation of selected components of the Discovering the Science of Alcohol curriculum. Students will use DSA materials as their textbook and explore online resources; and participate in scholarly evaluation of the effectiveness of various classroom activities, thus enhancing their content knowledge and repertoire of teaching methods.
