CMU’s Drum Major Clinic is open to beginning and advanced drum majors.
Our staff is made up of talented musicians who have a wealth of experience as former drum majors at both high school and university levels. Their knowledge of field techniques include both a variety of traditional approaches as well as the most up-to-date drum corps styles. They are also well trained in drill writing, conducting and drum major adjudication. The staff is dedicated to giving you an enjoyable, successful drum major experience that will make you an inspiration to your fellow musicians at home.
Steve Shaw is the director of the CMU Drum Major Clinic and has been a member of our instructional staff for seven years. Steve began his career as drum major at Clarenceville High School in Livonia and later became drum major of the Chippewa Marching Band at Central Michigan University. Steve is currently pursuing his master’s degree in instrumental conducting at the American Band College while teaching band in the Corunna Public Schools. His wealth of experience as both a drum major and a teacher serves him well in his position as director.
CMU’s Colorguard Clinic is open to guard captains or guard members who want to improve their skills and teaching techniques.
Our clinic leaders and staff are the best part of the Colorguard Clinic and the reason for its success. We assemble staff from across Michigan, as well as the Midwest region. Each staff member has the qualities we look for to teach you the up-to-date techniques and skills to keep you on the cutting edge of colorguard developments. You’ll enjoy your week-long campus experience under instruction and direction from our colorguard staff.
John Demkowicz is color guard designer and instructor for the Chippewa Marching Band. John also directs CMU's Metamorphosis Winter Guard, which has been the Michigan Color Guard Circuit State Champion in the Collegiate division four times. John is active with winter and fall color guards in and around the Midwest. As a designer and a clinician, he has served on the MCGC Board of Directors, and was in the color guard of the Drum Corps International World Champion Cavaliers for three years.
