What is a Proctor?
What is a proctor?
A proctor is an approved person that administers an exam to a CMU student. The
proctor will verify a student’s identity by checking a photo ID and will ensure
academic integrity guidelines during exams are followed (e.g., no notes,
textbooks, outside assistance, etc.).
Do I need a proctor?
Online Courses
require a proctor for one or more exams during the course. Check your course
syllabus or Blackboard to determine whether or not your course requires a
proctor or click here. It is
the student’s responsibility to locate and designate an acceptable proctor with
CMU Online.
Who can be a proctor?
Acceptable proctors include qualified CMU Off-Campus Centers, CMU Online staff,
or military/industry education or testing centers, school/college counselors,
administrators, and teachers or local librarians. Relatives, direct supervisors,
and co-workers are not qualified proctors and will be denied.
Any individual who cannot provide a suitable testing environment will also be
denied as a proctor. To be approved to administer exams, a proctor must be affiliated with a suitable
organization, such as a college, school, library or educational testing
facility. Contact information provided for the proctor must be affiliated with
this organization (e.g., phone number and e-mail address).
CMU reserves the right to deny
any proctor or assign proctors to students as necessary. If you have questions
about an individual’s suitability, contact our office at (800) 688-4268, option
#1 or e-mail
cmu.online.proctor@cmich.edu for clarification.
How do I report my proctor to CMU online?
To designate your proctor, you will need to complete the
Proctor Designation Form. Once submitted, two e-mails are sent. The first
one lets you know we have received your proctor designation form. A second
e-mail is sent informing you whether your proctor has been approved or denied.
Once your proctor is approved, your exam information is sent to the proctor (via
e-mail for proctored online exams, via U.S. postal mail for hard-copy or paper
exams). Once your proctor is in receipt of your exam materials, you may then
schedule your exams. The proctor approval process is performed during CMU Online
business hours, typically within one to two business days.
What if I already have a proctor on file with CMU online for a previous class?
Every term we will automatically send your proctored exam information to the
proctor you have on file with us. If you had designated a proctor in the past
but haven’t touched base with them in a few months or longer, please check with
that person to be sure they are still able to be your proctor this term. Be sure
to verify that their phone number and e-mail address have not changed. If they
have, you will need to update this information using the
Proctor Designation Form. If you previously had paper-based exams and now
have online proctored exams, you will need to verify that the proctor has a
computer you can use with internet access.
I designated my proctor; now what happens?
CMU Online will verify the information and send exam materials directly to the
proctor. Once your proctor is in possession of your exam materials, contact your
proctor to schedule an appointment to take your exam. Bring photo ID with you on the day of your exam. You will not be able to take
extra materials with you to the exam (e.g., purses, backpacks, notebooks,
textbooks, phones, etc.) unless your instructor has specifically told you that
certain items are permitted (e.g., book, certain type of calculator, etc.).
What is an online-proctored exam?
This is an exam taken online through Blackboard under the administration of a
proctor. Your proctor will need to have a computer with internet access
available for you to take your online exams. You will not be permitted to
utilize your own personal computer. Once you have accessed your exam in
Blackboard, the proctor will enter a password that will open the exam up to you.
How do I get my exam results?
Most online proctored exams are generally scored immediately. Your score will
display on the screen when you complete the exam. Web course results usually
appear in your Grade Center in Blackboard. Paper-based exams are mailed back to
CMU Online by your proctor where they are scored. Paper-based test results are
sent to your CMU e-mail account.
