Driver Education Certification Courses in Michigan

Whether it’s the start of a new career, or the means for some additional income, Central Michigan University’s driver education program offers a way to meet your goal.  

CMU is one of the leading universities in Michigan offering driver education classes. As long as you meet the qualifications of the program and complete the classes listed below, you will be on your way to becoming an approved driver training instructor!

Criteria for Application

Before enrolling in a driver education instructor preparation program, all students must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid driver license that has been in continuous effect for not less than 5 years immediately preceding application;
  • Have not accumulated 6 or more points under MCL 257.320 and have not received a conviction for which 4 or more points were assessed under MCL 257.320a within the 5 years preceding the date the application was submitted;
  • Must meet the criminal record criteria found in Section 59 of PA 384 of 2006 and the medical record criteria found in Section 17 (3) (j) of PA 384 of 2006.

First of four courses to prepare driver education instructors and provide them with the content knowledge and skills necessary to teach driver education.   View Schedule

Driver Education II: Developing Classroom Instructional Knowledge
Second of four courses to prepare driver education instructors; knowledge and skills needed to implement classroom instruction, classroom management, and appropriate student evaluation.   View Schedule

Driver Education II: Developing Vehicle Operational Skill 
Third of four courses to prepare prospective driver education instructors to conduct instruction which develops vehicle operational skills for the novice driver.   View Schedule
